The Call for Leadership

In: Blog

12 Jan 2009

I am constantly amazed at the lack of reform within the Republican party. After the past election cycle I assumed the wake-up call would have greatly reverberated within the halls of the GOP elected officials. I guess I was wrong.

The Republican Senate Leadership is entirely ineffective. I am baffled that they remain in place. Senator McConnell is spineless and precisely what we do not need at this time. He certainly does not represent the type of parliamentarian that we need to prevent massive spending and abuse of power by the Democrats. Senator Kyl might as well go too. Dig up whomever you have too, but the Senate leadership needs to be replaced. We can not take another loss like we took in 2008, or 2006. We have a large number of Republican Senators defending their seats in 2010, this is not a time for the “Loyal Opposition” to keel over and die.

RNC leadership is another story. There are a number of good minds at work, however I still stand strongly by my endorsement of Chip Saltsman. I consider the CD thing irrelevant; no one would have said a word had that been broadcasted on Colbert or the Daily Show. There are many who argue that Duncan has not had ample time to take control of things; this is a null argument. If we give him two more years and he fails again, then we recreate the same situation for 2012. Steele needs to be seeking public office, not RNC chair. I am sorry, but if the RNC selected an African American or a Minority Race in general as party chair they would be branded as “Me too!” by the Media and Liberals – then there would be further allegations of racism.

Going through the list of candidates only two names stick out, both I feel are capable leaders who can reinvigorate the party: Saltsman and Blackwell. I’m supporting Saltsman but if we wind up with Blackwell the world will not end. Either are fine choices.

In the House; well a few things have changed. Cantor has been named as Whip; which is a plus. John Boehner is still there, and I argue it is time to liven up his position but alas he can pass. Westmoreland has been renamed to the Whip Team, remember he was kicked out after voting against an emergency spending bill – hopefully this is a sign that fiscal conservatism is alive and well. House Republicans have to throw off this big government Republican-itis that has developed over the years.

The Democrats can have their way only if we let them. Now is the time to reform, build bridges, and rebuild the party. Currently we are losing those battles.

About this blog

I've been a political junkie for as long as I can remember. I now find myself in the tumultuous tides of law school, struggling to keep my head above the water enough to devote some time to commenting on politics. This blog is my, sometimes futile, attempt to stay abreast to the ever changing scene of national, regional, and local politics - and sometimes my random thoughts on life.
